I am having the same problem…

I am same problem on simulator iPhone 5, and real device iPhone 5s -

error: Failed to start an Appium session, err was: Error: Instruments crashed on startup

Have you’ll tried this:
Open the Xcode than select select the windows>organizer select the device and clear the Consol and device logs. After above steps instruments have detected the device.

Cleaning logs doesn’t help at this case. At lease for me.

right on man!!!
cleared the logs as mention by Mayuresh_Shirodkar & tests are running again!
thanks mate…

Any chance you’re experiencing this issue with the iOS Push Notification UIAAlert stealing focus from the app and causing Appium to not find your app in the foreground?

I recently started working on iOS native app automation -

MAC OS 10.10.2
iOS simulator - iPhone 5s, iOS 8.1
Appium 1.3.4

App is in App store - I am using the .app file of this app store app

iOS settings in Appium.app -
App path - gave path to .app file
Force device - simulator device

Code -

        DesiredCapabilities capabilities = new DesiredCapabilities();

    capabilities.setCapability("deviceName", "iPhone 5s");

    capabilities.setCapability("platformName", "iOS");

      driver = new IOSDriver(new URL("http://127.0.0.1:4723/wd/hub"),capabilities);

I also tried giving the app path onle in code but not in appium.app, I tried running with and without the bundle id of the app

But none of this works, I am not able to install the app in the simulator.

With the settings and code mentioned above I always get - Appium session could not be started. Instruments crashed

And when I give the bundle id of the app I get error as - A new session could not be created. (Original error: ENOENT, no such file or directory ‘/Applications/Appium.app/Contents/Resources/node_modules/appium/com.nbcuni.syfy.syfychannel/Info.plist’)

Can someone please help me out?

Also just mentioning the steps I followed to get the .app file -

  1. installed the app from app store - say app name ‘myApp’ on the real device
  2. connected the device to itunes and synched and checked ~/Music/iTunes/Mobile Applications/ it had the myApp.ipa - converted to zip and unzipped and it showed all app files along with myApp.app - this .app file is stored at a location and used in the automation configuration

Hope this .app file is what we can use in simulator and we do not need the app source code right ?

I recommend to use real device for iOS since the swipe was broken for simulator (see below reference)

In addition from my experience it is wise to conduct tests on real device since some issues will be discover only on the real thing.
Cheers…

Thanks Meny!

I agree about the real device testing.

So on real device - we can use .ipa file of the app store build ?

Do we also need to give the bundle id ?

i am using the .app file that can be extract from your .ipa however when testing iOS you need to compile your application for debug otherwise you wont be able to install it (if you don’t know how to do it advise your DEV team).
finally you need the device udid (no need for bundle id)- below is n example for relevant capabilities:

DesiredCapabilities capabilities = new DesiredCapabilities();
	capabilities.setCapability("deviceName",genMeth.getValueFromPropFile("deviceName"));
	capabilities.setCapability("device",genMeth.getValueFromPropFile("device"));
	capabilities.setCapability("udid", genMeth.getValueFromPropFile("udid"));
	capabilities.setCapability(CapabilityType.VERSION,genMeth.getValueFromPropFile("CapabilityType.VERSION"));

	capabilities.setCapability("app",genMeth.getValueFromPropFile("pogoplugPath"));

Sure… thanks! Will ask the dev team how to compile app to debug mode.
