Is a JDK really required or is a JRE sufficient?

Hi!

When using a binary package of appium (i.e. not compiling from source), is there actually any need for a JDK or is a JRE just as good? I have made a quick test using a JRE and it seems to work just fine, but maybe I will run into problems later?
