Is XCUITest driver mandatory for IOS appium tests, in an Xcode 8 enviroment?

I want to use these scenarios…

IOS 9 on Xcode 8
IOS 10 on Xcode 8
Previously I worked with appium tests, in an Xcode 7 environment without the XCUITest driver…
Can I still do it on Xcode 8 / appium server version 1.6.0, in my mentioned scenarios?
